Make the most of your stay in Arles to explore Montmajour Abbey, a classified UNESCO World Heritage Site!
Founded by Benedictine monks in 948 on the "main mount", this abbey comprises two sets of buildings; your visit will take place in the first. This site inspired numerous modern and contemporary artists, including Van Gogh, who was fascinated by Montmajour Abbey.
Afterwards, you can explore the Saint-Pierre hermitage, the abbey's oldest building. You'll also visit its two 11th-century chapels carved out of a natural cave.
Explore the abbey church, an unfinished building home to a 16-metre-high nave. Admire the cloister filled with sculptures representing animals, both real and imaginary, alongside horned creatures.
Built in the 14th century, following the Hundred Years' War, the Tower of Pons showed off the abbot's power. From its top, you'll be able to admire a panoramic view of Arles and its surroundings.
You'll also be able to visit the crypt, a structure that supports the abbey. At the top of the hill, you'll find the 12th-century funeral chapel.
